The tennis program at Pitt-Greensburg finally has some stability and is headed in a new direction — the right direction — say those associated with the program.

Some might think that a new head coach with little practical tennis experience wouldn’t be the right person to turn around a program. But Athletic Director Tony Berich said he knew that Jason Giran, who also serves as an assistant coach for men’s basketball, would be perfect for the job.

“He took the job over on the fly and has done a great job so far,” Berich said. “Organization is what the program needed, and now we have that. He knows how to recruit and has those connections with the high school area because of basketball, and he has a great attitude. We also needed someone who would take pride in coaching the program.”

After two years without a home-field advantage, the Pitt-Greensburg baseball team will play games on campus next season. And they won’t be alone.

Next year, Bobcats baseball will return to its field on campus and the softball team will have its first on-campus field in school history.

Young baseball team experiences ups, downs

But one constant has been the team’s ability to score runs.

With only five returning players from last season, this Bobcats team has a lot of young, new talent. Second-year Coach Adam Jack has been pleased with the offense thus far, as they have scored an average of seven runs per game.

“I knew coming in that we were going to be talented, but very young,” he said. “There have been times when six or seven freshmen have been on the field at the same time. It takes some time to catch up to the speed of the game, but we are getting better every day.”

Despite season-ending loss, optimism surrounds men's basketball program

The Pitt-Greensburg men’s basketball season ended on Feb. 23, as they fell to No. 2 seed Pitt-Bradford, 77-63, in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament. The Bobcats finished the season with a record of 12-14, which is the most wins the program has had during the past four years.

“(Pitt-Bradford was) a much more experienced team, and they had leadership that we don’t have yet,” coach Jeromy Yetter said. “They just made more plays.”

Seniors Rashad Davison and Darnell Hampton played their final game as Bobcats. Davison was named to the AMCC honorable mention team as he ranked seventh in the conference in scoring at 14.5 points per game, and twelfth in rebounding with six per game.

Lady Bobcats turn season around after slow start

The Pitt-Greensburg women’s basketball team is on fire, having won nine of their past 10 games. The Lady Bobcats are now playing how many expected them to all season, erasing a slow start to the season.

Head coach Carol Gelet thinks she’s figured out the reason for the the slow start.

“We were not in game shape, the players did not gel as a group on the court and this in turn led to lack of confidence and trust on the floor,” Gelet said. “And also the other teams were ready to compete and unfortunately, we were not ready.”

They are know.
