Hockey team makes a run for the playoffs
In their second season, the Pitt-Greensburg ice hockey club is poised to make a run at the championship.
With only three games left before the playoffs, the Bobcats are 12-6-1, and head coach Tim Baldwin expects his players to head into the playoffs with the right mindset.
“The team has played great all year,” Baldwin said. “Now we just need to enter the playoffs with a strong want for the championship and the will to win.”
The story of the season so far has been their ability to score and score often. They have tallied 131 goals in 19 games this season. Freshman Mike McCurdy is a big part of that as he has accounted for 38 points so far.
“The reason myself and our team have been so successful with scoring this season is because of the teamwork everyone puts forth,” McCurdy said. “I work very well with the guys I play with, and that goes for the rest of the team as well. We have really good chemistry between the players and coaches, and everyone puts the team first.”
Teamwork is another reason for their success. Baldwin said it extends off the ice, as well.
“They support each other on and off the ice,” he said. “Being disciplined and playing smart hockey will ensure us a shot at the championship.”
Everyone on the team believes they have the talent and everything else that it takes to win the championship, and Dan Moyer is no exception. He believes the team knows what it will take, and everyone is willing to do so.
“I knew we were going to have a very productive season,” Moyer said. “In order for us to win the championship, we are going to have to come together as a team even more than we already have. We will have to put aside our personal goals in order to strive towards the teams overall goal and that is to win the championship and bring it back to UPG where it belongs.”
Coming off of a tough 8-7 loss to CCAC, the Bobcats will look to bounce back in their final home game of the season, Saturday, Feb. 6. They will be playing West Virginia University (D-II), with the puck being scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. The Bobcats play their home games at Center Ice Arena in Delmont.
