Lady Bobcats turn season around after slow start
The Pitt-Greensburg women’s basketball team is on fire, having won nine of their past 10 games. The Lady Bobcats are now playing how many expected them to all season, erasing a slow start to the season.
Head coach Carol Gelet thinks she’s figured out the reason for the the slow start.
“We were not in game shape, the players did not gel as a group on the court and this in turn led to lack of confidence and trust on the floor,” Gelet said. “And also the other teams were ready to compete and unfortunately, we were not ready.”
They are know.
Given the program’s winning history, everyone involved knew a change had to be made.
“We had a decision to make as a team — change our ways, work harder and get back on track or accept that we were not very competitive and be a .500 team,” Gelet said. “Having a successful history made it easier to convince the players that losing did not feel very good and that we would assume responsibility to turn things around.”
With six seniors and a few players expected to transfer to the Oakland campus at the end of the school year, this year was shaping up to be the best chance for the team to go far in the postseason in the immediate future. The players came together to get in position to do so. With six games left in the regular season, the Lady Bobcats are in second place in the conference with a record of 13-6 (11-3).
Kelsey Wilcox is having another great season. She gobbled up her 1,000 career rebound and in the next game or two she ought to reach 1,500 points. Additionally, she likely will soon break the school record for scoring of 1,502 points set by Tiffany Menhorn in 2008. Wilcox is the only basketball player, male or female, to have 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in UPG basketball history.
Wilcox and the rest of her teammates have their eye set on another AMCC championship.
“If we keep on playing like we have been, we should see nothing but success. There are some good teams in our conference but there is not a team I think we can’t beat as long as we play our best basketball, we should be fine,” Wilcox said.
If they do repeat as champs, it will be because of the little things and, of course, taking one game at a time.
“We have to focus on the details of each game,” Gelet said. “Keeping good offensive spacing, making the easy pass, finishing layups, making free throws, minimizing turnovers and playing aggressively on the boards. Ultimately, these details dictate the outcome of close games.”
The Lady Bobcats’ next game is a big one as they face rival and fourth-place Penn State Altoona away tonight, Wednesday, at 6. Pitt-Greensburg will be looking to avenge their loss to them earlier in the season.
